How to Filter Your Twitter Stream

As a NH social media marketing agency, we hear a lot of reasons why people aren’t on Twitter. “I’ll just use it to procrastinate” and “I don’t care what people are having for breakfast” are some common ones–but we say that’s no excuse! Twitter can definitely become a black hole for your productivity, but when it’s used right, it’s an incredibly powerful tool. One of the things we love most is teaching businesses how to find information, make connections, discover innovations, and promote their brand on Twitter.

Twitter has over 500 million users, sending a collective 340 million tweets a day. It gets loud sometimes, sometimes Twitter can’t even keep up, but you can learn to tune out the noise. (You could cut down on the number of people you follow, but that’s no fun.) Here are some ways to cut through the jabber and make sure you don’t miss those important tweets.

Use Slipstream to Filter Tweets

(Ed. note: the Slipstream Chrome app has shut down. Try some of our other options below for filtering your Twitter stream.)

You can hide tweets by hashtag or topic–all you have to do is tell Slipstream who, what and where. If you change your mind and decide you do want to see tweets about a hidden topic, you just open Slipstream and then edit or delete the individual item. Tweets on that topic will now appear in your feed.

A lot of people use Tweetdeck, Hootsuite or another platform for reading Twitter, but in my mind this feature is a big check mark in the “pro” column for Twitter’s web interface.
